| Description | This monograph focuses on Oldřich Nový and his career between cultural industries and political regimes. One of the chapters analyses his career peak at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s, and focuses on his creative outputs on screen, on stage, in radio and in a recording studio. This is not a first book focusing on Nový, however so far not much attention has been paid to his work post 1948. In the state socialist mode of production, previously celebrated actors suddenly lost any starring opportunities; in many cases we have witnessed prosecutions and imprisonments. Not all stars shared this tragic fate and as the case of Oldřich Nový clearly demonstrates, even postwar cinema is a story of compromise, negotiations and second chances. |
