Description The paper discusses girls' education in Moravia at the end of the 18th century, using the example of the Brno Region. In 1774 Maria Theresia signed the General School Ordinance (Allgemeine Schulordnung), which established three kinds of schools: minor school (Trivialschule), major school (Hauptschule), and normal school. Schooling was now compulsory for the youth of both sexes between the ages of six and twelve. Thanks to the school records, which were reported by the regional school commissioner from the Brno region, it was possible to ascertain the number of girls who were required to attend school and also about their actual attendance at schools. Results are compared within individual religious groups and different settlement types. Attention was paid especially to the comparison of boys and girls. At the end of the paper, factors that had an impact on school attendance of children in schools in the Brno region were mentioned.
