Description This essay addresses the problematic idea of spiritual love in Ugo Foscolo’s Inni alle Grazie within the social, cultural and literary context of the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. The essay considers the conjugal symbolism of the Graces in both Foscolo’s poem and Canova’s sculpture, Foscolo’s interpretation of Petrarch’s love and the way in which Foscolo transcends the dichotomy of sensual and terrestrial love. Finally it is suggested a semantic equivalence between the ideas of spiritual love and harmony in Foscolo’s work.
