Description The goal was to outline the story of suffering and of the artistic activity of the Czech composer Rudolf Karel during the World War II, particularly during the period when he was kept in the Pankrác prison and the Small Fortress in Terezín by the Nazis. It was important to reflect on this subject in the context of Karel's entire life and works, including his activity in the World War I and the characteristics of his artistic output. The posthumous reception of his works from the period of the World War II was also mentioned. An interesting question to be discussed was how worthy of attention those compositions could be without the extreme circumstances of their genesis, which made them extraordinary from the historical point of view. The paper has been published on www.musicologica.cz.
