| Description | Literary works are currently the focus not only of literary studies, but also of other disciplines from a specific perspective. Adaptation studies, which has been booming in recent decades, has traditionally been conceived as a description of the relations and transpositions between two media-different artistic products, especially between literature (theatre, comics) and film, However, the recent paradigm shift in this field has led to adaptation being understood as a specific discourse, cultural and textual practice in the broadest sense of the word, which according to many theorists (Linda Hutcheon, Thomas Leitch, Camilla Elliott, Timothy Corrigan, etc. ) to be explained in a much broader material context (fan fiction, franchise, etc.), which leads, among other things, to the undermining of the stability of artistic artefacts, the rejection of any limits and the negation of established methodologies. Thus, adaptationist scholars depart from the earlier study of textual elements that are replicated in the medium of moving images. They have essentially left them to so-called intermedia studies, which continue to insist on media specificity and the boundaries between phenomena. Using examples from Czech literature and film, this paper will address the question of how contemporary practices of adaptation studies and those of literary studies can productively complement and interconnect, and how they can contribute to the nature of the distinctive processes that occur within cultural practice. |
