Description The presentation will discuss the dissertation research in progress, which aims to explore the strictness of religious ideas and practices that control female sexuality (= mate-guarding, e.g. emphasis on premarital purity, chastity, restrictions of free movement, menstrual taboos, female genital mutilations, proper clothing, punishments for transgressing the rules, etc.) in a possible connection with the inherent paternity uncertainty. From an evolutionary point of view, fathers would lose by investing in someone else's genes, so there are evolved mechanisms that help increase paternal certainty and may thus motivate fathers to provide the necessary (direct and indirect) care for their children. To empirically test cross-cultural variation in mate-guarding and paternal care, I draw on already coded ethnographic data from the D-PLACE database.
