Description Recovering from substance abuse addiction is not only about the stage of abstinence and remission. It is multifaceted rehabilitation – physical, social, moral, economic, psychical, and spiritual. The grounded theory method was used to analyze the interviews with six male respondents who spent at least two years of sobriety, and to elaborate on their personal changes in their alcohol addiction recovery. The aspects of personal growth were categorized in the process of accepting responsibility for oneself, for other persons and for the world. The central category was subjective perception of the period of life in addiction, which proposed a typology of people in recovery, namely the group of so-called "adolescents" and "restarters". The topic of responsibility as the component of personal growth in recovery and its handling in the process of alcoholism treatment is also discussed. The findings can be used in therapeutic practice aimed at supporting the recovery process and preventing from relapses.
