Description With an eye toward contributing to the debate over the elusive notion of untranslatability, this paper discusses the notion itself against the backdrop of literary theory, or, more precisely, the theory of fictional worlds. It explores the cornerstones of the supplied theory, draws attention to the untranslatability of intensional structure and proposes that while the intensional structure may as well be inherently untranslatable, the intensional functions that arise from the text’s texture are not. To substantiate this claim, the findings are illustrated on English–Czech language pair, and the (un)translatability of selected facets of intensional functions demonstrated on an English narrative text and its Czech translation.
