Description Most of us associate archaeological excavations in Crete with the breathtaking monuments of the Bronze Age Minoan civilization. The island has been an equally interesting centre of activity in other historical periods, not least the early Middle Ages. During the period of Arab rule in the 9th-10th centuries, Crete was even one of the most important emirates. Why is the Arab expansion in Crete still little studied? And what does archaeological research that starts from scratch look like? The guest of archaeologist Jiří Macháček and art historian Ivan Foletti this time was classical archaeologist Věra Klontza from the Institute of Archaeology and Museology at Masaryk University.
