Description The paper reflects the pupils´ experiences with differentiated instruction in attainment groups. The data come from a large project that was designed as a multi-case study. The paper uses data from the first case study, specifically from ethnographic observation (approx. 150 hours), from individual interviews (n=4) and friendships dyads (n=2*6). The analysis showed that teachers use differentiated instruction according to the specific label that they assign to each group than according to the actual outputs. It means that the differentiated instruction sometimes doesn´t respond to pupils ´needs.
