Description The ethnographic region of Moravian Wallachia and its cultural specifics attracted the attention of intellectuals from the second half of the 18th century onwards, including travellers, publicists, Enlightenment-minded officials and members of the clergy. Many remained undecided in their use of the language in which they published, using both Czech and German as needed and appropriate. In the course of the 19th century, it is evident that the culture of Moravian Wallachia shifted to the focus of interest of mainly Czech scholars, with German texts appearing more in the context of country-wide surveys or more general works about the region or a particular locality. A noticeable change took place from the 1930s onwards, when the culture of some ethnographic regions of Moravia (especially Haná and Wallachia) again became the subject of research by German-language ethnographers and their concept of 'tribal ethnography' (stammheitliche Volkskunde). These tendencies intensified in the first half of the 1940s, when, in addition to several rigorous theses defended at the German University in Prague, an independent department focused on the tribal history and ethnography of Moravia (Lehrstuhl für Volkskunde und Stammesgeschichte Mährens) was established. This comparative paper analyses the approaches and interpretations (or desinterpretations) of German- and Czech-language ethnographic research on the customary and ceremonial culture of Moravian Wallachia, especially in the context of the 1930s.
