Description The idea of delimiting the literary field according to the criterion of national affiliation took root in the 19th century in an atmosphere in which literature was attributed a significant role in the legitimization, integration and mobilization of the nation. As such, it stems from the then understanding of literature as an expression of the specificity of a certain national collective and its exclusive property. Despite its inherent political nature and numerous contradictions, the construct of national literature remains "perhaps the single most durable literary-critical concept" and "the predominant form into which literatures and literary study are institutionally organized throughout the world" (Imre Szeman). The aim of this paper is to reflect on the relevance of drawing the national boundary in the classification of literature from the perspective of the 21st century and to consider the conceptual pitfalls of transcending it within the framework of supranational and transnational approaches to the South Slavic literary corpus.
