Description Digenis Akritas constitutes a stable element in the cultural and literary memory of contemporary Greeks. The image of an ideal hero of Byzantium emerging with the mention of his name is mainly based on recent literary creation, which was more influenced by more recent acritic folk songs than by the medieval poem itself. My paper dealt with a recent literary work that connects inspiration from the medieval poem with the tradition of acritic songs and modern Greek literature, all in a book for teenagers. It is the novel "Gather Your Courage, Ando" (Mazepse to tharros sou, Ando, 2020) by George Hatzopoulos, which, instead of presenting yet another variation of the Digenis story, narrates its sequel. Hatzopoulos creates a new and simultaneously Byzantine storyworld that successfully communicates with a modern readership.
