Description Between the second half of the 13th century and the end of the 14th century, the spread of Arthurian novels across the Italian peninsula gave rise to a long-lasting and multifaceted cultural phenomenon. The stories of the Round Table captured the interest of disparate audience categories, from the readers of the Tuscan and Ligurian Maritime Republics to the Angevin rulers and the exponents of the seigniorial regimes, who made them the subject of transcriptions, translations, compilations, and original elaborations. In Italy, the large number of copied and illuminated Arthurian manuscripts and the variety of textual and figurative solutions adopted by the various codices testify to how lively and transversal the phenomenon was. This book, through the study of the interplay between textual content, illustrative additions and reception dynamics, highlights the central role of the Arthurian myth and its many "appropriations" in the identity-building processes and cultural policies of the Italy of the communes and courts.
