Description Rubber either synthetic or natural is a material found in a wide variety of objects. From technical parts such as gaskets and sealings, everyday objects like erasers or dolls to modern and contemporary art pieces. Rubber is used since the first half of the 20th century. Conservation of rubber is however still quite uncharted territory. In the article the main causes and basic mechanisms of rubber degradation are explained. The effects of degradation of natural rubber in gas masks from a museum collection as well as in test samples that have been exposed to three different accelerated ageing methods are investigated. The effectiveness of these methods and the state of degradation of the gas masks is assesed using instrumental analysis: ATR-FTIR, TGA and mechanical testing.
