| Description | Saint Francis Xavier (1506–1552) allegedly sometime around the mid-16th century referred to Japanese as the "language of the devil." Whether we believe it to be the work of the devil or not, it is undeniable that Japanese remains to this day an exotic, distant, and often incomprehensible language for Europeans. But what is Japanese really like? Is it complex and difficult? Is it written with letters or pictures? How can one create Japanese text on a computer or mobile device? Does its grammar have any logic? The lecture aims to present modern Japanese in two aspects: Japanese as a language with the most complex writing system and Japanese as a language conveying a specific perception of reality. |
