Description This paper will begin with a brief reflection on the nature and contribution of aesthetics as a discipline and an introduction to the possibilities of aesthetics as a theological discipline. It will then discuss the notion of the work of art in the text "Theses Towards a Trinitarian Ontology" by Klas Hemmerle. The conception of the work of art proposed and outlined by him, based on the ontologically fruitful notion of speech and play, can be a bearing for the interpretation of the work of art as such and for specific interpretations of individual artifacts. Hemmerle's reflections will be developed and the paper will attempt to demonstrate that instead of (self-contained) fortresses, Hemmerle's approach "builds bridges" and draws new/different boundaries. Finally, the fruitfulness of this approach will be demonstrated through selected artworks. ...is theological aesthetics really only a fringe discipline whose application can be considered at most for a limited (though perhaps not marginal) range of artworks?
