Description This article focuses on the architectural representations within a group of manuscripts of the Histoire ancienne jusqu’a César copied and illustrated in Genoa between 1280 and 1320. Ancient cities depicted in these codices reflect the characteristics of Genoa’s main civic monuments, whose distinctive feature is the presence of Roman and late antique spolia. These reuse practices are not resulting from simple aesthetic concerns, but are carefully calibrated strategies, inscribed in the project of constructing a Genoese mythography, and therefore in the attempt to give the city a particular historical and political dimension. The aim of this article is to describe the participation of the manuscripts of Histoire ancienne in the construction of Genoese identity through the invention of a collective civic memory going back to antiquity.
