Description This paper discusses the dressing of devotional statues during the Baroque period. Baroque piety was characterized by its emotionality and expressiveness, both in art and in the expression of faith. It also developed many unique forms of devotion, including the dressing of devotional statues in textile garments. These were primarily Marian statues, whose garments were made of expensive and often richly embroidered fabrics. This practice not only expressed reverence for the Virgin Mary but also humanized her through these garments, allowing the faithful to establish a more intimate connection with her and, by extension, with the statue. Although numerous contemporary devotional graphics and prints demonstrate the relative prevalence of this phenomenon in the Czech lands during this period, and the tradition of dressing some statues still survives today, this topic has not yet been sufficiently addressed in scholarly discourse. The aim of this contribution is to open the discussion and present new stimuli for research in the fields of art history, aesthetics, and theology.
