Description | In 1873, the Franz Josef Museum of Arts and Crafts was founded in Olomouc, named after the Emperor Franz Josef (Kaiser Franz Josef Gewerbemuseum). It was one of the few institutions of this kind that were established in Austria-Hungary in that year, which can be considered one of the ten oldest art and industrial museums in the world. The foundation of the museum was an initiative of the Olomouc municipality and its mayor Josef Engel. For a significant part of its existence, the institution was spatially and functionally connected to the local secondary school. The museum has never had direct employees, only volunteer, unpaid ones. Along with limited financial and space possibilities, this was one of the reasons for the museum's stagnation: its collections did not expand much after the initial boom and interest in the institution waned. The city of Olomouc took over the museum at the beginning of the 20 th century and in 1924 incorporated it into the city's Museum of Local History together with the Museum of History and Natural History. |
