Description | Although set in the underworld, the scene of Aeneas' encounter with his father Anchises is filled with the light of a joyful prediction of the future fate of the gens Iulia. Only carefully does Virgil depict the shadow side of things in the image of the prematurely deceased successor of Augustus. Lucan's description of an attempt to make a similar prediction can be seen as an absolute counterpart. A closer examination of both texts seeks not only a negation but also a possible elaboration of Vergil's ideas. |
