Description | The study focuses on the course of the Hussite wars in northeastern Austria - in the region of Marchfeld with special reference to the town of Marchegg. The beginning of the Hussite campaigns in this region is connected with the existence of a Hussite garrison in Břeclav in southeastern Moravia, which was established in early 1426. The following two years are a time of intense Hussite invasions into the adjacent region of Austria. It was also then, in 1427, that the town of Marchegg was sacked. A new finding of the author is that the Austrian Duke and Moravian Margrave Albert V achieved the return of Břeclav from the Hussites as early as 1428. This also corresponds with the fact that after this year there are no reports of major Hussite incursions into the easternmost part of Austria. The author also takes note - as far as the sources allow - of some aspects of everyday life during the war, such as the interesting Austrian and Hungarian Dremel family, a member of which was accused of betraying the town of Marchegg to the Hussites. The family denied the accusation and argued that they were heavily involved in fighting against the Hussites, e.g. the Battle of Zwettl. The study is part of the author's long-term research on the Hussite Wars in Moravia and Austria. |
