Description This article examines the conditions and didactic possibilities for teaching German as a second language to adult learners that recognizes learners as subjects of their own learning process and enables them to find their own approaches to and voices in the language and reality they are dealing with. The starting point is an analysis of the programme of state-organised integration courses, which shows that its institutional structure and as well its language teaching concept contradicts the programme's claim to take the needs of participants into account and enable them to participate. In distinction thereto, the article outlines the concept of a subject-oriented, literary-reflective didactics based on a critical examination of current teaching materials and on considerations grounded in subjectification theory. Its aim is it to open up spaces for learners for creative-poetic co-design of language and society.
