Citation
Description The chapter deals with the question of how Duke Albert V and his Duchy of Austria financed the long war against the Hussites (1420-1436), both the campaign into Bohemia and Moravia and the defence against later Hussite incursions into Austria. The central source is the annual accounts of Albert's hubmeister Berthold of Mangen, which inform us of the amount of war expenses and the associated increase in ducal revenues. The author also takes into account other sources and attempts to get a closer look at the structure of expenditure and income. What role did extraordinary taxes, loans and pledges play, but also some special revenues such as the papal tithe or the profits from the confiscation of Jewish property? In a separate excursus, the author examines the financial impact of the Hussite wars on a selected ducal monastery - the canonry of Klosterneuburg. He also publishes a table of the amount of the Hussite tax prescribed for Austrian monasteries, chapters and deaneries in 1429.
