| Description | The Sino-Vietnamese historiographic tradition is based on correlative cosmology and mentions natural phenomena in parallel with state and military events. Natural phenomena and events can be indirectly interpreted by the historiographic tradition as visible reactions to the actions of the ruler, government and social tendencies. Analysing records from the so-called Northern and Southern Dynasties period (1533/1540–1593: parallel rule of the M?c dynasty and the restored Le (under the de facto rule of the Tr?nh dynasty), this paper points to an increasing intensity of mentions of natural phenomena with a direct negative impact (floods, droughts) and phenomena without direct interpretation during the period of increasing intensity of mutual fighting between the M?c and Tr?nh dynasties, especially in the late 1580s and early 1590s of the 16th century. |
