Description The talk showed how the idea of a relative vs. inherent frame of reference -- a concept known from spatial language -- can be used to explain various types of case marking in the area of subordinate clauses. The discussion revolved around Russian, where "za tem" (literally "behind that") is used to mark both purpose and cause. The talk uses the notion of speaker's perspective on the succession of events to explain this apparently unusual syncretism.
