| Description | The video presents the principle of operation and practical use of Marey's drum – a simple but crucial element that enabled the transfer of pneumatically measured quantities from the sensor to the recorder and thus to the kymograph. These drums existed in many variants and were a fundamental part of research practice in the laboratories of physiologists and experimental psychologists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The footage shows the preparation of the drum for measurement and its integration into the recording device. They are reminiscent of procedures that were once commonplace but are now little known to most experts. The video therefore serves not only as a demonstration of the technical principle, but also as a historical testimony to how experimental data was once obtained and how these instruments contributed to the establishment of psychology as an empirical science. |
