Description When on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, in 1645, Swedish forces decided to attack Brno, they did not choose the most opportune date. The St. Thomas Madonna, a miraculous icon that hundreds of faithful prayed to on that day, protected the city from the Swedes and helped successfully repel their attack. This story is far from the only legend connected to the painting. Where the painting was created and how it came to Brno are still among the questions that trouble art historians. In episode 54 of the Středověk (jinak) trvá podcast, Tomáš Drobný, head of the museum department at the Moravian Museum, who devoted his dissertation to the painting, will help us explore this mystery. Art historian Ivan Foletti and archaeologist Jiří Macháček spoke with him about paintings that perform miracles, Charles IV, and why history was 'faked' in the Middle Ages.
