Description The paper is based on the dichotomy of conceptualizing landscape as (a) a predominantly universal characteristic of a given physical space (space) for life and (b) a cultural and group-specific meaning of landscape shaped by a place (place) with multiple meanings and contributions to social identity (Hunziker et al., 2007). It shows the emergence and typical phenomena of mining and post-mining landscapes (not only) in Karviná, among other things, in the depiction of mining in selected works by painters of the region. It presents the views of local inhabitants on the state and prospects of the post-mining landscape, polemicises the idea of permanent destruction of life in the landscape and searches for its possible forms as a place of contemporary life.
