Description | During the 1920s, the so-called peasant gowns, dresses with "Czechoslovak" embroidery, gained popularity in the USA. Most of them originated from the Czechoslovak Art Studio, a chain of outlets that were founded and run by Slovak female entrepreneurs settled in America. The lecture focuses on the items they designed, made, imported and sold as well as on the broader context of their activities, including their role in promoting folk art and Czechoslovakia abroad. Why was folk art so popular and what did it represent in the USA? How did folk art contribute to the emancipation of women and what image did it create about interwar Czechoslovakia? |
