Description European travelers in the 13th-14th centuries faced numerous misunderstandings with the local population in the Mongol Empire. The reports of Franciscan missionaries (William of Rubruck, John of Plano Carpini) document the difficulties in adapting to different natural and cultural conditions. The lecture deals with the methods of communication, diplomatic gifts and practical problems in the steppes and cities of Asia and examines the impact of intercultural and interreligious misunderstandings on the medieval Christianization of Asia.
