Description I critically summarize and discusse the Czech traditional trace-metric theory of verse. In conjunction, I present contemporary theory of verse, mainly foreign and interdisciplinary, especially linguistic, psycholinguistic, reception and cognitive approaches. I present the possibilities of contemporary versology in the Czech context in a polemical and critical way towards traditional Czech versology (especially Červenka, Versology Team of the Academy of Sciences). The main problems of contemporary versology are its entrapment in outdated concepts that are not based on poetic practice, language and speech, but on historical-cultural concepts and ideologies. Thus, since the 1960s, versology has been unable to respond to contemporary poetic production, which has led to the complete isolation of theory from practice, not only in academia but also in teaching in secondary and higher education, and to the "conservation" of poetry as something elite and complicated that needs to be understood and interpreted. This is also due to the still dominant emphasis on neo-critical and narratological interpretation of poetry, because these approaches foreground meaning rather than poetics. All this leads to the overlooking of the elements that make lyric poetry a distinctive genre: rhythm, somatic effect and ritual modality.
