Description April 2019. The cathedral is on fire in Paris! The nation mourns, politicians immediately “launch reconstruction.” But which cathedral is supposed to be reborn? This book presents Notre Dame in a dynamic light, undergoing constant change. From the 12th century until its grand reopening in 2024, the cathedral was transformed according to the ideological needs of the monarchy, revolution, empire, and republic. The authors place Gothic architecture in the context of Mediterranean and Eurasian relations and question the myth of French exceptionalism. They vividly describe the cathedral as a victim of revolutionary iconoclasm, a witness to Napoleon's self-coronation, the object of Eugene Viollet-le-Duc's romanticized reconstruction, and Macron's new mythologization. As a remarkable palimpsest of power, fantasy, and memory, as a place where politics, heritage, and cultural identity clash.
