| Description | Europeans travelling through the Mongol Empire in the 13th and 14th centuries experienced many misunderstandings with the local people. The accounts of medieval Franciscans such as William of Rubruck and John of Plano Carpini record the difficulties arising from the different natural, social and cultural conditions to which they had to adapt. The paper reveals how these missionaries and other travellers communicated, how gifts were exchanged and what other difficulties awaited them in the steppes and cities of Asia. |
