Description Visits to tombs, crypts, catacombs, and other mysterious underground spaces were key stops on cavalier journeys and later Grand Tours. In Rome especially, such sites had long been destinations for pilgrims drawn to early medieval burial grounds associated with martyrs and saints, as recorded in numerous pilgrimage guides and city manuals. In the early modern period, religious motivations were complemented by a growing humanist and antiquarian interest in ancient remains, turning underground spaces into objects of archaeological and scholarly exploration.
