Description Poor institutions („Institutions for the Poor“) are a forgotten concept today. They were founded in the Josephinian era as charitable aid agencies for the poor. The authors found that the archival sources continued until the end of the 19th century, so these Institutions formed a „parallel track“ to public welfare for the poor, which was organised according to the homeland principle. Concrete examples of poor relief beneficiaries show not only the form and variety of need, but also the organisation and information channels of the Institutions for the Poor. The analysis of the financial management of the Institutions for the Poor over a period of more than 50 years provides insight into the microworld of rural communities, their options for relieving the poor, their significance, and the consequences for poor aid in the 19 th century in the Habsburg Monarchy.
