| Description | This article examines the opening poems in the first chapter of two primary editions of the late Ming dynasty novel Jin Ping Mei (JPMa and JPMb) and explores their differences in form, content, and literary function. The analysis demonstrates how these introductory poems not only set the thematic tone for the novel but also influence its interpretation. The variations between the editions reflect broader editorial tendencies, including shifts in emphasis on morality, symbolism, and narrative coherence. The restructuring of poetic elements in JPMb suggests an intentional effort to reinforce key themes and foreshadow later developments in the novel. Additionally, the presence of similar poetic motifs in other Ming dynasty literary works indicates their intertextual significance and broader cultural resonance. The study also addresses the challenges of translating classical Chinese poetry, highlighting the tension between linguistic accuracy and aesthetic fidelity.
