Description “People from big cities don’t know what real life is about” – we have all heard this before. Yet, what do people mean when they talk about “real life”? What makes life real – and why does “realness” attach so easily to the urban-rural divide? Based on an analysis of media discourses in the Czech Republic, we argue that people use the notion of “real life” to make sense of the relationship between peripheries and centers. The distinction between real and unreal allows them to make their experience meaningful and link it to the basic imaginaries of modernity.
