| Description | This paper focuses on the journalism of Karel Čapek and how he reflected on modern art. Čapek frequently wrote about modern art in his columns and essays. His attitude was open to new artistic movements, but he also aimed to critically evaluate them and make them accessible to the general public. He was not only an enthusiastic supporter of the avant-garde but also a sensitive commentator on social change. The paper concentrates on specific texts in which he dealt with modern art and traces how his views evolved over time. Particular attention is paid to his relationship with Cubism, Expressionism, and other movements. The aim of the paper is to show how Čapek’s journalism contributed to shaping the discourse on modern art in the Czech environment of the first half of the 20th century. |
