Citation
Description The paper will focus on the reception of Poetism and Surrealism in the writings of the Italian Bohemist Angelo Maria Ripellino. Particular attention will be given to the monographic profiles of the poetic works of Vítězslav Nezval, Jaroslav Seifert, and Konstantin Biebl. After the Second World War, Ripellino moves away from the comparatist method typical of the first generation of Slavic scholars in Italy and develops a new approach, which consisted in connecting Czech literature with other forms of art and situating it within a broader European context. His views on Poetism and Surrealism in Czechoslovakia were also strongly influenced by his extensive correspondence with Czech intellectuals and artists. The aim of the paper is to map the specific aspects of this foreign scholar’s perspective and to demonstrate his method through concrete examples. The theoretical foundation is provided by selected chapters from Ripellino’s Dějiny současné české poezie and his correspondence with prominent figures of the contemporary Czech literary and artistic scene.
