| Description | This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of film director Vladimír Sís. In 1954, he embarked on an adventurous expedition to remote Tibet with cinematographer Josef Vaniš. They became the first Czechs to reach Lhasa and even met His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Under extremely challenging conditions, they captured unique footage on 35mm film, which became the documentary The Road Leads to Tibet. Despite the period’s somewhat exaggerated commentary by Karel Höger, the film serves as a fantastic time machine, inviting viewers to visit the mysterious land on the roof of the world—one that, sadly, cannot be seen in the same way today. In 1956, the film received awards at the Venice International Film Festival and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. After the screening, you are invited to a discussion with Luboš Bělka, who has long studied the legacy of the Sís–Vaniš expedition, and director David Sís. |
