| Description | The paper presents the aims and preliminary results of the project Christological Broadside Ballads in the Oral Tradition, supported by the Czech Science Foundation. The research focuses on Czech broadside ballads with Christological themes that survived in oral tradition and are preserved in the archival collections of the Institute of Ethnology CAS in Brno. These songs, documented mainly in Moravia and Silesia between the nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, offer a unique insight into the interaction between printed and oral culture. The presentation will introduce this unique archival material, the methods used for its analysis, and the retrospective approach that traces the history of each song from its oral versions back to older printed and manuscript sources. It will also outline the planned outcomes, especially the collective monograph, and discuss how this research contributes to the broader understanding of European cheap prints tradition(s). |
