Description The study focuses on the hitherto largely overlooked international activities of Václav Nebeský (1889–1949), the Czech art historian, critic, and dealer who worked in Paris between the years of 1923 and 1936. He is known for the role he played in the state purchase of French art in 1923 and his theoretical contribution to Czech modern art, but less so for his engagement on the internation- al art market. As the author of the first Czech study on modern art and an expert on the French avant-garde, he was active in Montparnasse as a mediator, not only between the Czech and French art scenes. The article reconstructs Nebeský’s activities within the context of the international art trade, including his attempt to arrange the sale of Édouard Manet’s celebrated work A Bar at the Fo- lies-Bergere, and sets it within the broader network of cultural and commercial relations of the time.
