Description The study examines Alexandre de Rhodes’s 1651 Vietnamese grammar Linguae Annamiticae seu Tunchinensis brevis declaratio to show how he grappled with the typological challenges of describing an isolating language within a Graeco–Latin framework and which strategies he used to explain Vietnamese grammatical and syntactic phenomena lacking European equivalents, especially his use of Latin analogies and their purposes.
