Description The study deals with stability of personality in adolescence. The data from the longitudinal study of children carried out in the Institute of Psychology of Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1961 - 1980 were used for analysis. The research sample consisted cf 126 persons (59 boys and 67 girls) in whom the data from personality assessment by Eysenck's MPI in the age of 16 and 18 were available. Except of correlation analysis the analysis of stability was carried out also on the level of personality types that were created by means of cluster analysis on MPI questionnaire items. In spite of expected lower stabiluity of personality in the course of adolescence the correlations corresponded to values found in adults. The changes of personality can be interpreted rather as developmental changes: in both the personality dimensions the changes to social desirable poles predominantly occur, i.e. to extraversion and to emotional stability, this trend being more marked in extraversion. The authors explain this trend by social factors whether it is the increased need and frequency of social contacts or the self-presentation in the sense of social desirability.
