Description The subject of this contribution should be the insight into French-Czech attitudes to the end of the 19th century, which represented one of the essential sources of creation of modern literature, or so-called Modernity in the Czech literary works. The main attention is paid to "the most French" poet of the time Julius Zeyer and to the part of his work that is inspired by medieval literature. Zeyer s literary method is explained on the basis of a comparison of the medieval chanson de geste (the song of deeds). The Song of Roland by a medieval author and a homonymous song by J. Zeyer. This comparison works on the two key characters - the king Marsile and Charles zhe Great.
