Description The Brno Historical-Philosophical School, which emerged in the 1950s from where there had formerly been the Department of the History of Philosophy and Logic at the Faculty of Arts in Brno and to which Josef Macháček (1917-1984), Jiří Cetl (1925-2000), Karel Hlavoň (1930), Lubomír Nový (1930-1996) and Jiří Gabriel (1930) belonged, was a community of teachers and scholars who shared their convictions about the sense of philosophy, about the character of work concerning its history and about the way philosophy should be taught at universities. The great contribution of the Brno school indisputably resided in the steadfast orientation of the systematic research towards the history of philosophy, especially the history of Czech philosophical thinking of the 19-th and 20-th centuries. The school was formed under the specific conditions of the mid-1950s, it helped to a great extent to preserve the continuity of philosophical work both at the Brno university and in the wider Czechoslovak context and it managed to produce several generations of professional philosophers, university and secondary school teachers of philosophy, journalists and public sector and cultural workers.
