Description 10 first-episode schizophrenia men were assessed by Wechsler memory scale III and high-resolution MRI when clinically stabilized. MRI scans were used for hippocampal volume computation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between hippocampal volume and memory functions in the first episode schizophrenia. 10 normal controls matched for age and gender were also assessed with MRI to be able to compare hippocampal volume in two subject groups. We did not find any significant differences in hippocampal volume between schizophrenia patients and control group. Subsequently, we did not find any significant correlations between hippocampal volume and memory parameters despite the fact of expressed memory dysfunction in our patient group. The results, together with literature data, show rather complicated relationship between brain structure and function in schizophrenia.
