Description To compare behavioural effects of valproate, carbamazepine, lamotrigine, gabapentine and citalopram we used the mouse model of social stress based on the suppression of locomotor-exploratory activity in a male group-housed mouse repeatedly defeated in social interactions with an aggressive singly-housed partner. Antidepressants were shown to disinhibit the social defeat-induced supression of the locomotion in the open field test. Citalopram, valproate and carbamazepine exhibited similar antidepressant-like effects in this model of social stress, unlike lamotrigine and gabapentine.
