Description The article presents some of the results of a representative questionnaire survey concerned with adult education which was carried out as part of the project "Adult Education in Different Phases of the Life Cycle: Priorities, Opportunities and Possibilities for Development", funded by the Ministry of Employment and Social Affairs and conducted at the Institute of Educational Sciences of the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University in Brno. The article focuses primarily on the question of educational needs defined in terms of the insufficiency of preceding education or qualification. It addresses the question of the extent to which Czech adults who have finished the initial education require further education and the extent to which they really obtain it. The authors also identifies connections between the character of educational needs and different profiles of the adults who undertake further education or fail to do so. Factors discussed include professional and economic status, education, age and some more subtle subjective variables such as the individual`s life plans for the future.
